Restful Reads

Ethics, Approach & Commitments

Restful Reads has been built from lived experience and with a very clear purpose: to help children feel calm, safe, and settled at the end of the day.
Everything else follows from that.

From the earliest stages, the platform has been shaped around responsibility, trust, and long-term care for the families using it. This page sets out how that shows up in practice.

Safeguarding comes first

Safeguarding is not an afterthought or an add-on. It's built into the structure of the platform from day one.

Stories are created within a strict framework that governs themes, character behaviour, and how real-world experiences are reflected. The aim is always to support a child's sense of safety and emotional regulation, never to introduce distressing or inappropriate ideas.

Content is guided to remain gentle, grounded, and age-appropriate at all times. Where real-life experiences are reflected, they are handled carefully and in a way that supports calm and reassurance.

Each story also passes through multiple layers of moderation to help ensure tone, content, and language remain appropriate and consistent.

This is not open-ended storytelling. It is intentionally shaped to protect and support.

Environment, charity and responsibility

Helping children sleep should not come at an unseen cost elsewhere.

Right from pre-revenue, Restful Reads is committed to acting responsibly in both environmental and charitable terms, with the aim of offsetting and giving back more resources than we use, and giving back more broadly in ways that align with our values. While the energy required to generate and deliver a story is relatively low compared to many forms of children's bedtime content, responsibility still matters.

In the early stages, this includes opting into Stripe Climate with no minimum threshold, and making monthly donations to WaterAid to support access to clean water - a small but meaningful way to give back against the water and energy used in technology infrastructure.

Alongside this, ongoing monthly donations are made to charities aligned with supporting children and families, including NSPCC and Barnardo's . We're also proud to be supporting local mental health initiatives through community events, and to be donating to our local children's ward.

As Restful Reads grows, this will expand into more targeted and impactful partnerships with charities closely aligned with the platform's purpose.

This is not something to be introduced later. It's part of how the platform operates from the beginning.

Privacy by design

Privacy is treated as a core feature, not a policy.

All data is encrypted throughout its lifecycle - from the moment it's used to create a story, through to how it's stored. This applies to all data, not just personal information.

In practical terms, this means that even in the unlikely event of a data breach, the information would not be readable or meaningful. Story content is not stored in a human-readable format, helping provide a high level of protection for anything entered into the platform.

Families should feel comfortable entering whatever is helpful for their child, without concern about how that information might be accessed or used later.

Professional input

Children's wellbeing is at the heart of Restful Reads, and the platform has been designed with careful consideration of approaches commonly used to support calm, reassurance, and emotional regulation.

To support this, Restful Reads is committed to working with childcare and child development professionals to review and strengthen our content and guidelines over time. It's still early, but conversations are already underway to that end, with the aim of ensuring the platform continually reflects best practice in supporting children's wellbeing.
